As a general rule, foreigners wishing to enter Japan must have a valid passport and visa.
The visa must be obtained in advance at the Japanese embassy or consulate abroad and the visa must meet the purpose of entry.
When landing in Japan, you must be examined by an immigration inspector at the port , and must be given a seal of landing permission to determine your status of residence and period of stay.
(However, this is not the case for mutual short-term visa exemption and re-entry permit)
(2)Visa
As a condition for entering Japan, you must receive a passport at a Japanese diplomatic mission abroad in advance, "This passport is valid, and there is no problem if the passport holder is allowed to enter Japan within the range stated on the visa.
It is like a letter of recommendation to enter Japan. (However, this is not the case for mutual short-term visa exemption and re-entry permit).
(3) Status of residence
As a general rule, foreigners entering and staying in Japan will be granted landing permission at the port of entry and exit, and will be able to stay with the status of residence determined at that time.
In other words, the status of residence is the basis for a foreigner to stay in Japan and is a qualification for performing the activities stipulated in the "Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act". You may stay in."
In addition, the range of activities that a foreigner can perform while staying in Japan is determined according to this status of residence.
Must not carry out any activities with income other than those permitted under the activities of its visa status.
(4) Certificate of Eligibility system
The visa is obtained by applying at a Japanese diplomatic mission abroad.
If you apply for a visa for long-term stay, such as when you are working, the examination will take longer than when you stay for a short time.
For this reason, in many cases, the Immigration Bureau in Japan examines in advance whether the activities performed by foreigners who wish to enter or stay in Japan meet the conditions of their respective status of residence, and if the conditions are met, If you approve of it, we will issue you a Certificate of Eligibility.
If you present this Certificate of Eligibility to a Japanese diplomatic mission abroad and apply for a visa, you will normally be issued within 5 business days. It should be noted that the status of residence "short stay" is not subject to the issuance of a certificate of status of residence.
The flow chart of the Certificate of Eligibility is as follows.
* Enter Japan (In principle, landing within 3 months from the date of issuance of Certificate of Eligibility):
Show your passport and visa at the landing port, submit your Certificate of Eligibility, and give your passport a seal of landing permission.
In addition, you will be issued a residence card that will be issued to foreigners residing in Japan over the medium to long term.
At Narita Airport, Haneda Airport, Chubu Airport, Kansai Airport, New Chitose Airport, Hiroshima Airport, and Fukuoka Airport, passports In addition to giving a landing permission seal above, a "Residence Card" will be issued to foreigners residing in Japan for a medium to long term (hereinafter referred to as "Medium to Long Term Residents").
At other ports of entry/departure, a "resident card" will be issued after a landing permit is stamped on the passport and the foreigner who is a medium- to long-term resident has reported the address to the municipal office ( Mail from the residence card issuing base to the relevant residence). The "Residence Card" is issued to mid- to long-term residents with permission related to residence such as landing permission, permission to change the status of residence, and permission to renew the period of stay.
